Keynote Highlights: The Evolution of Lighting Design in the Middle East
The Light + Intelligent Building Middle East event welcomed distinguished speakers Lee Sweetman and Nikos Moskofidis, partners at dpa Lighting Consultants, for the keynote entitled “The Evolution of Lighting Design in the Middle East: 25 Years of Shaping the Region’s Lighting Design Practice.”
Pioneering Lighting in Dubai
Lee reflected on dpa’s early regional projects, beginning in the late 1970s with iconic developments like the Sheraton on the Creek. At the time, Dubai was an emerging city. Lee highlighted how these early projects laid the groundwork for dpa’s lasting impact on Middle Eastern lighting design. By 2004, dpa established a studio in Dubai, cementing its role in shaping the region’s architecture and design.

Integrated Lighting Design
A core principle of dpa’s approach, emphasized by both Lee and Nikos, is the seamless integration of lighting into architectural environments. Their diverse portfolio—spanning hospitality, transport, and large-scale architecture—reflects their focus on contrast, texture, and architectural character. Therefore, this approach elevates lighting from a functional necessity to a defining feature of a space’s identity.
Lighting’s Role in the Nighttime Economy
The speakers detailed the transformative role lighting plays in the Middle East’s thriving nighttime economy. Twenty-five years ago, evening activities were primarily limited to theater and social gatherings. However, today, strategic lighting turns urban spaces into vibrant hubs after sunset. Key benefits of a well-lit nighttime economy include:
- Job Creation: Lighting enables businesses to flourish and expand employment opportunities.
- Economic Growth: Lighting supports diverse industries, becoming vital to the economy.
- Urban Renewal: Lighting revitalizes underused spaces, extending their utility.
- Cultural Interventions: It supports cultural events and creates memorable experiences.
- Enhanced Leisure: Lighting makes urban and rural areas more inviting for residents and visitors alike.
In addition, Nikos stressed how well-designed lighting generates revenue, supports tourism, and fosters cultural engagement, making it a cornerstone of urban planning.

The Importance of Observation and Sketching
Observation is central to dpa’s design philosophy. Lee and Nikos shared how their work draws inspiration from everyday objects, nature, and cinema. Consequently, this careful observation informs meticulous planning, ensuring that lighting interacts harmoniously with materials and creates distinct nighttime experiences.
Moreover, sketching is another vital aspect of their process. Lee and Nikos underscored how hand-drawn sketches allow for quick and effective communication of ideas. Unlike time-intensive digital renderings, sketches foster client collaboration and encourage creative exploration during a project’s early stages. As a result, this hands-on approach strengthens the foundation for impactful lighting designs.
Prioritizing Sustainability and Innovation
dpa’s projects emphasize energy efficiency and environmental control to meet global and regional sustainability goals. However, Lee and Nikos stressed the importance of challenging rigid standards that may hinder creativity. dpa delivers environmentally sound and tailored lighting solutions by balancing innovation and responsibility.
The Transformative Power of Color
Color is a critical tool in lighting design. Nikos explained how color adds depth, mood, and identity to spaces. For example, warm tones evoke relaxation and comfort, while cooler hues energize and focus. Furthermore, thoughtfully integrating color enhances user experiences and aligns with cultural and architectural contexts, making spaces more dynamic and engaging.
Collaborative Design for Excellence
Collaboration is key to dpa’s success. Lee explained that their team’s active involvement ensures projects benefit from diverse perspectives. Tools like dark rooms for material testing allow for experimentation and refinement. Consequently, this collaborative approach fosters innovation and provides high-quality results.
Lighting’s Bright Future in the Middle East
Looking ahead, Lee and Nikos expressed optimism about the future of lighting design in the Middle East. The region’s rapid urbanization and cultural diversity create endless opportunities for innovation. With over 7,500 projects completed and 70 designers across five studios, dpa Lighting Consultants remains poised to shape the Middle East’s lighting landscape.
