Over the weekend, we received the sad news of the passing of Victor Palacio, FIALD, CLD. I had the privilege of meeting Victor last year at the IALD Enlighten Americas Conference in Rancho Bernardo, where he was inducted into the IALD College of Fellows. Victor was the Director, en ideas en luz in Ciudad de México. Since the announcement, heartfelt tributes have been pouring in across social media.

A statement on the IALD website honors his legacy: “His immeasurable contributions, mentoring countless designers and elevating the profession globally, leave a legacy of excellence and inspiration. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His light will continue to shine in the hearts of those he touched.” Read the full IALD statement here.

IALD President Andrea Hartranft, FIALD, shared on LinkedIn: “Our community has suffered a great loss—Victor’s quiet, gentle, humble way was a master class in grace and leadership. I’m so very saddened by this. May his memory be a blessing.”

LightingDesign-Workshop also posted a tribute on LinkedIn, stating (translated): “We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Death is not a light that goes out. It is putting out the lamp because dawn has come. Have a good trip, our friend.”

Victor was also a mentor for the Silhouette Awards. You can read their LinkedIn tribute here.

Kevin Houser also shared his condolences,“My heart breaks to read this news. Victor brought so much beauty into this world, with his lighting of course, but even more so with his generosity and warmth. My sincere condolences to Liliana and all of Victor’s family.”

On LinkedIn Steven Rosen, FIALD, wrote, “Yesterday, we unexpectedly lost Victor Palacio, a central figure in the international lighting design community. This news leaves me shocked and enormously saddened. Our community grieves as a blanket of haze settling into a mountain valley; the ambient sounds are muffled, and our focus turns inward.” Read the rest of Steven’s comments here.
