IALD Enlighten Europe Opens
The 2025 IALD Enlighten Europe 2025 Opens in Valencia with Emotion and Inspiration

The IALD Enlighten Europe 2025 Conference officially opened on 26 June in Valencia with a warm welcome, global collaboration, and a powerful tribute to a beloved leader. Andrea Hartranft, President of the IALD, kicked off the event by expressing deep gratitude to attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, and the IALD staff for creating another exceptional experience.

A Spirit of Collaboration

Andrea welcomed Álvaro Coello, President of the Asociación Profesional de Diseñadores de Iluminación (APDI), IALD’s Spanish counterpart. “We’re grateful for their continued collaboration and thrilled to work together once again this year,” she said.

Álvaro addressed the audience with energy and pride. “Welcome lighting lovers from across Europe and beyond,” he began. He highlighted APDI’s role in curating activities, including guided city walks and evening talks. “Lighting is more than a profession,” he said. “It’s a celebration of shared values, creativity, and community.”

He also praised the IALD as a vital learning partner. “Despite our different languages and cultures, we speak a universal language—the language of light,” Álvaro added.

In Memoriam: Paul Marantz and Victor Palacio

Honoring Legacies

The ceremony paused for a heartfelt tribute to two industry legends who recently passed away: Paul Marantz and Victor Palacio. Andrea honored their legacies, highlighting their leadership, passion, and influence on the lighting community.

Next, Andrea presented the 2025 President’s Special Citation Award in memory of Victor Palacio. His son, Victor Jr., accepted the award . A moving video reflected on Palacio’s many roles, from regional coordinator in Mexico to IALD President. “Victor’s light will never fade,” Andrea said. “His spirit continues in the traditions and people he inspired.”  It is probably the best video tribute in our industry that I have seen.

A Strong Start to a Packed Program

With emotion still in the room, Andrea officially launched Enlighten Europe 2025. She thanked the Content Advisory Committee, led by Philip Rose, for curating the program from more than 110 proposals. She also urged attendees to visit the sponsor demo tables and to connect.  Those with green dots on their badges were invited to participate in two Crosstalk sessions—roundtable discussions that offered prizes and facilitated deeper networking.
