Yesterday, 9 MAR 2023, marked the annual celebration of Italian Design Day, which took place in 100 countries around the world. The Italian Trade Agency held an event in New York City, which I attended. Fortunately for me, the theme of this year’s event was light, encompassing both natural and artificial sources.
One of the highlights of the event was a speech by Adolpho Guzzini, of iGuzzini, who spoke via video conference. He discussed his 60-year career in lighting and emphasized the importance of collaboration between architects and designers.
Another notable speaker was Enzo Eusebi, a world-renowned designer who shared his passion for Italy. He discussed the federation of city-states in Italy, where each city has its unique culture and specialties. Eusebi’s projects with iGuzzini were also highlighted, including his Tree of Light, which features various technological elements such as lighting, audio, video, security, and voice and data. Eusebi also emphasized the importance of shadows in his designs.
Following the event, I had the opportunity to meet Enzo and speak with him and his daughter, who acted as an interpreter. I hope to interview him later in the year about an upcoming project he is finishing.
The Salone del Mobile.Milano and Euroluce show were also hot topics of discussion. Euroluce aims to create a fluid and empathetic platform that elicits unexpected emotions from visitors. The Italian Trade Agency hosted a fantastic event, serving attendees with Italian red wine from the Tuscany region, meatballs, gnocchi, and pasta. The food was as delightful as the content. Overall, Italian Design Day was an exciting celebration of design and technology, showcasing the best of Italy’s creative talent.
