It is with great sadness that I share with our industry the passing of Richard Kosheluk.
Richard was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. After graduating high school, he pursued a degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Manitoba and went on to receive a Master’s in Architecture from University of Texas at Austin. He started as an Architect with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in1988. After being licensed as an Architect in the state of California, he eventually shifted to Polshek and Partners where he was on the design team. There, he served as the Project Architect on the Stanford Art Museum which by his own measure, was the crowning achievement of his architecture career. Upon relocating back to Texas, Richard closed out his tenure in architecture at HKS in the sports division where he was a member of the design team and Project Architect of the Round Rock Baseball Stadium. During his architecture career, he recognized the incredible value of lighting design and shifted his talents to focus on lighting. Joining PHA Lighting in 2000 and later becoming a partner, he collaborated with Paul Helms, Hilary Wainer, Erin Flaum and many others in creating some iconic and recognizable projects worldwide.
In 2007 Richard established Archiluce International and continued to create stunning and award winning lighting designs. He was passionate about his work and truly understood how light played such an important part of architecture. I had the pleasure of collaborating with him and becoming a good friend over the past 25 years.
Richard is survived by his daughter Alyx; former wife and friend Leigh Ann Ledbetter; sisters Janice and Iris; nieces Vanessa, Erica and Olive; nephew, Brock; cousin Darlene as well as all those who knew and loved him. He was truly one-of-a-kind. A celebration of his life party will be forthcoming. All that knew Richard are welcome to come and share memories.
