Celebrating Excellence in Lighting Design: Claudio Ramos and Victor Palacio Honored as IALD Fellows
At the recent IALD Enlighten Americas Conference, the lighting design community celebrated two influential figures: Claudio Ramos, FIALD, CLD and Victor Palacio, FIALD, CLD . Both were honored with the prestigious IALD Fellow designation, which is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the field. This recognition highlights their commitment to lighting design and their roles as mentors, advocates, and innovators.
Claudio Ramos: Community Building and Professional Growth
Claudio Ramos joined IALD in 2004 and quickly began making his mark. In an interview with me at the conference, As Director at Electrolight in San Francisco, Claudio’s educational foundation in architecture and extensive international experience in the lighting industry allow him to offer a distinctive combination of technical proficiency and innovative solutions. In the below interview, Claudio shared that his designation as a Fellow is “a validation from peers” and holds deep personal meaning. Over his 20-year career, Claudio has advocated for community within lighting design. “I wanted to put the word out—like, we are lighting designers,” he explained, recalling his early work to raise awareness in San Francisco.
As a chapter coordinator for eight years, Claudio dedicated himself to strengthening the local lighting community. He later joined the membership committee, continuing his mission to support IALD’s growth. When the Certified Lighting Design (CLD) program launched, Claudio volunteered to champion its importance. “I don’t know how I found time for that,” he joked, but his commitment to the profession made it possible.
Diverse and Notable Projects: Claudio’s projects span a wide range, highlighting his adaptability. He tackled his most challenging work in the early 2000s with a 138-meter yacht project, collaborating with German engineers. “That was the one that was more challenging,” he admitted. He recently designed the lighting for Square Headquarters in San Francisco, earning him multiple awards. “I like the diversity; I do all kinds of things,” he noted.

Victor Palacio: Merging Science, Art, and Education
Victor Palacio, founder of Ideas en Luz in Mexico City, combines his scientific background with a passion for lighting design. Initially trained in electronics engineering, Victor’s fascination with optics and light behavior shapes his work.
Victor believes light is more than just science. He views it as a source of knowledge that affects many aspects of life, from health to philosophy. Since 1988, Victor has shared this belief as an educator, inspiring students through his role as academic coordinator for the Dialux lighting course and by leading museum and architectural lighting design courses. “Victor’s passion for lighting goes beyond his professional achievements,” a colleague noted. He regularly speaks at industry events worldwide, including UNESCO’s International Day of Light and LightFair, reinforcing his status as a thought leader.

Both Claudio and Victor have held impactful roles within IALD. Claudio’s work as chapter coordinator and membership committee member fostered community and growth within the organization. Victor’s leadership has been equally impressive. He has served as IALD President, chaired the membership committee, and contributed to the IALD Education Trust’s board of directors. These roles reflect their dedication to advancing lighting design and educating the public about its value.
The Fellow designation for Claudio Ramos and Victor Palacio celebrates careers filled with innovation, mentorship, and advocacy. Their work inspires the next generation of lighting designers and highlights the profound impact of well-executed lighting.
