Library of Light: Why I Can’t Wait to Experience Es Devlin’s Latest Creation at Euroluce 2025
Each year, Euroluce at Salone del Mobile.Milano delivers something special—and in 2025, it might be something extraordinary. As someone who has covered lighting from every imaginable angle, I’ll admit this upfront: I know very little about the intersection of lighting, literature, science, and spirituality. That’s exactly why I’m eager to explore Library of Light by Es Devlin.
Set in Milan’s iconic 17th-century Cortile d’Onore, Devlin’s installation will be a centerpiece of Euroluce, fusing light, philosophy, and art in a way I’ve never quite seen before. A rotating, illuminated structure that functions as both a sculpture and a library? Count me in.
The installation includes over 2,000 books, each one selected with the theme Thought for Humans in mind. Visitors—myself included—will be able to browse the books, listen to spoken-word recordings from voices like Benedict Cumberbatch and Es Devlin herself, and even donate a book to become part of Milan’s public library system. I love the symbolism: light as knowledge, rotating like a sundial to reveal truths hidden in shadow.
And it’s not just about aesthetics. This is a working, participatory space. During the installation’s two-week run, Library of Light will host live readings, workshops, and conversations that dig into our connection to craft, culture, and the future. From Indian weaving traditions to cutting-edge design discourse, the program is both global and deeply human.
Of course, I’m especially excited about the lighting. Devlin’s manipulation of sunlight and shadow, her integration of LED scrolls that “recite” literature, and her philosophical treatment of illumination are unlike anything I’ve covered. This isn’t just about seeing—it’s about feeling and thinking through light.
I’ll be on the ground in Milan, experiencing it all firsthand. And while I usually show up knowing exactly what to expect, this time I’m showing up as a student. Curious. Open. And ready to let the light lead the way.
If you’ll be at Salone del Mobile this April, make sure to experience Library of Light for yourself. If not, stay tuned—I’ll be sharing my impressions and reflections in the pages of designing lighting (dl) magazine and online at designinglighting.com.
