The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has chosen Carole Wedge, FAIA, NOMA, LEED AP, as its next Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer. She will step into the role on January 1, 2026, following a December transition.
Leadership Experience
Wedge is widely recognized for her impact on the profession. A past CEO of Shepley Bulfinch, she led the firm’s national growth and cultural transformation over 17 years. She also co-founded the AIA Women’s Leadership Summit and earned the 2020 Edward C. Kemper Award for service to the profession.
Her influence extends across numerous boards, including the AIA Board of Directors, the Architects Foundation, and the Boston Society of Architects.
Looking Ahead at AIA
As CEO, Wedge will oversee AIA’s Washington headquarters, a staff of 150, and more than 200 chapters worldwide. Her priorities include expanding member engagement, championing equity and sustainability, and highlighting the essential role of architecture in society.
Reflecting on the appointment, Wedge said: “I am honored to serve our members and advance the value of design. Together, we can strengthen our community and expand architecture’s impact.”
Transition
She succeeds Stephen Ayers, FAIA, who has served as Interim CEO. The search was led by Heidrick & Struggles and a diverse committee chaired by 2024 AIA President Kimberly Dowdell, AIA, NOMAC.
