Special fundraising initiative will honor memory of Karen Krieger

The ALA Women in Lighting (WIL) Committee is excited to announce new initiatives as part of the ALA Virtual Symposium taking place Nov. 1-4, 2021. The Symposium is free to all ALA members and replaces the in-person Conference, originally planned for September in Lake Tahoe, Calif., that was canceled due to devastating wildfires in the area.

As part of the Virtual Symposium’s programming, WIL will host professional speaker, comedian, and author Christina Irene on Monday, Nov. 1, at 4:45 p.m. CDT.

Irene’s session, sponsored by Dallas Market Center, will cover her “SuperPowerment” approach of eliminating the internal barriers that often keep women from pursuing what they really want. As a woman working in a male-dominated industry, Irene understands and is a proud advocate for women as well as people with disabilities. Her presentation offers entertaining stories, humor, and unique tips on thriving and achieving against the odds.

Immediately following the 30-minute presentation, participants will have the opportunity to network in smaller breakout groups and further discuss the concepts.

After the full group reconvenes, there will be random prize drawings for autographed copies of Irene’s books about communicating with and supporting people with hidden disabilities, as well as products generously donated from Allegri Crystal, Bulbrite, Hubbardton Forge, Progress Lighting, and Varaluz. Participants must be present to win.

The ALA WIL Virtual Symposium event features prize drawings for products from Allegri Crystal, Bulbrite, Hubbardton Forge, Progress Lighting, and Varaluz.

Registration for the full ALA Virtual Symposium will provide access to this event, which is free and open to everyone in the industry to learn and connect with each other. Find more information at ALAConference.com.

Additionally, the ALA WIL Committee is announcing a fundraising initiative for a donation to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA) in the name of Karen Krieger who recently passed away. Karen was vice president of BC Sales, and her husband, Brad, president of BC Sales, serves on the ALA Manufacturing Representative Steering Committee. Karen’s cousin, Martha Graham of Martha Graham & Associates, is an involved ALA WIL Committee member.

WIL has created limited-edition collectible pins to have commemorated the 2021 ALA Conference with the intent to establish an annual fundraising initiative for a worthy cause around each Conference. This year’s pins are sponsored by Visual Comfort & Co. making it possible to donate 100 percent of the $20 purchase price to support OCRA in Karen’s memory. Anyone may purchase a pin and/or make a donation via the online ALA Member Store, which can be accessed through WIL’s page at LightingWomen.com. The association and WIL Committee are grateful for the opportunity to honor Karen and her family.
