Celebrating its 40th award year, the Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) is pleased to commence the entry process for its annual IALD International Lighting Design Awards is now open.
Since its establishment in 1983, it is the longest running international lighting design awards program, and the highest honor in the profession to recognize work that reaches new heights and represents excellence in aesthetic and technical achievement.
Any individual lighting designer or lighting design firm may enter a project for an award; awards will be granted only to the team or teams that performed the design of the architectural lighting for the project. The project must be a permanent architectural lighting design solution for which construction was completed after 1 January 2021. Projects entered for consideration in the previous year can be resubmitted, so long as they adhere to the date requirements.
IALD Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Knowlton, IALD, is eager to see the submission and evaluation processes spring to life:
“Nothing on our calendar compares to the energy surrounding the Awards cycle,” he said. “The lighting design community celebrates these awards on a worldwide scale, not only as a demonstration of exceptional creative work, but an exemplification of the appreciation these professionals have for one another from every corner of the globe.
“As a past award recipient myself, I can attest that the honor of such peer recognition is both humbling and wholly gratifying.”
There is no minimum or maximum number of awards granted by the panel of seven judges. Awards of Excellenceand Awards of Meritare based on points earned for both aesthetic and technical design achievement. Recognition in the form of a Special Citationmay be given for a particularly innovative aspect of a project’s lighting design.
IALD’s Radiance Award, the top honor of the IALD International Lighting Design Awards, will be presented to the project that is judged among all submittals to be the finest example of lighting design excellence (based on the highest point score).

Standard entries will be accepted from both IALD members and non-members through 31 January 2023, with a late-entry deadline of 15 February 2023.
After two rounds of judging conducted in the early Spring 2023, award recipients will be announced later that year as part of a combined live and virtual event presentation being developed by the IALD.
