Minami-Rokuroshi of Ono City in the Fukui Prefecture has been certified by DarkSky International as Japan’s first Urban Night Sky Place, and the country’s fourth International Dark Sky Place. Minami-Rokuroshi has been recognized as the best star-watching location in Japan; the area features alpine landscapes that contains diverse wildlife and rich natural resources. Since 2020, Ono City has worked to reduce light pollution through better-controlled lighting fixtures, and has promoted awareness on light pollution control among citizens.
