The 2024 IESNYC Student Lighting Competition invites students to explore the theme of “Proximal Light,” delving into the transformative power of light as a medium for intimacy and connection. This challenge urges students to construct three-dimensional studies that express the role of light in fostering closeness amidst a world balancing physical and digital interactions.
Eligibility Criteria:
Students enrolled in design, engineering, or architecture programs at colleges or universities within New York City’s five boroughs or the former Mid-Hudson Section (Columbia, Dutchess, Green, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties) are eligible to participate, regardless of residency.
Participants are encouraged to register and submit their project images and descriptions using the provided link by March 7, 2024. For inquiries, individuals may contact studentcompetition@iesnyc.org.

The IESNYC Student Lighting Competition, honoring the organization’s founder, Patricia DiMaggio, upholds a commitment to education, community, and spirited competition. From its inception with 8 participants in 2000 to over 100 today, this legacy continues to flourish with the support of the community.
This competition stands as a pillar in the IESNYC’s mission to promote lighting awareness, encouraging students across disciplines such as lighting, architecture, interior design, art, product design, photography, and electrical engineering to explore the artistic and functional dimensions of light. Through diverse interpretations of a central theme, it empowers students and has engaged nearly a thousand design enthusiasts, integrating into educational curricula and sparking a deep interest in lighting design.
