IALD Chase the Dark 2024: Sustainability through Upcycling

by | Feb 6, 2024 | News

The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) is gearing up for its eleventh Chase the Dark event on March 20, 2024, coinciding with the Vernal Equinox. This 24-hour celebration involves individuals and groups around the world participating in lighting activities as the sun “chases” darkness from one side of the International Date Line to the other. This year’s theme is Upcycling, focusing on repurposing materials for lighting projects. Participants are encouraged to create tealight luminaires from used or discarded items, emphasizing sustainability and environmental responsibility. Social gatherings will be organized by IALD Regions and Chapters in various cities, but individuals can join from anywhere. The event will feature global participation on social media, community building opportunities, educational discussions led by lighting experts, and a sustainable design focus. Participants are invited to use the hashtag #IALDChaseDark to share their upcycled luminaires on social media. Chase the Dark 2024 promises to be an inspiring event showcasing the transformative power of lighting design and its role in building a brighter future.
