HOK is making strides toward achieving a carbon-neutral portfolio, surpassing energy reduction targets set by the AIA ahead of schedule. In 2023, they achieved a 65.5% reduction in energy use intensity, exceeding the AIA’s 50% average, with projects removing 47.6 million metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. The firm addresses both operational and embodied carbon, employing techniques like life cycle assessments and sustainable material tracking. With initiatives like the Sustainable Material Tracking and projects like New York City FC’s fully electric stadium, HOK demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability across complex designs. Their Climate Action Plan, due for release later this year, will further detail their journey towards AIA 2030 goals.
