by | Jun 25, 2021 | News

Luminaries of the lighting profession gathered online for the second time to honor the winners of the 38th Annual International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) International Lighting Design Awards, presented by Cooper Lighting Solutions, the longest running and one of the most prestigious lighting design awards programs in existence.

The award ceremony was hosted by Douglas Leonard, IALD President, and Mirjam Roos, the 2021 Awards Chair. Leonard congratulated the community for continuing to reach new heights in lighting design even amid the challenges of the last year.

Award recipients streamed in from across the globe to receive their awards—from Chicago, New York, and Seattle in the United States; London, UK; Tokyo, Japan; Shali, Russia; and Sarjah, UAE. The night truly celebrated the best in lighting design on a global scale.

The award ceremony began after Leonard and Roos introduced the judging panel and thanked them for their dedication to maintaining a fair and impartial judging process.

The 2021 IALD judges were:

  • Yahui Cheng, IALD, CLD: Light Poetic (Melbourne, Australia + Taipei)
  • Kristen Garibaldi, Associate IALD: ARUP (New York, NY USA)
  • Julia Hartmann, IALD, CLD: Lightsphere GmbH (Zurich, Switzerland)
  • Joe Lawton: Media Objectives at Valerio Dewalt Train (Chicago, IL USA)
  • Vladan Paunovic, IALD, CLD: Ramboll Lighting (Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Tina Turrisi: HDR (Sydney, Australia)

Next, the awards were announced in alphabetical order by award. In total there was 2 Special Citations, 13 Awards of Merit, and 5 Awards of Excellence.

In a touching moment before the announcement of the Radiance Award, the top award for global lighting design, the IALD took a moment to thank their out-going Chief Executive Officer Marsha Turner. Turner has led the IALD for 18 years, and many IALD executives shared farewell videos and words of thanks for her many years of leadership.
