Chip Israel Gateway Grant Opens Doors to Lighting Careers

The lighting industry needs more talent. First, students need to know it exists.

The Chip Israel Gateway Grant, announced by the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education, aims to increase enrollment in lighting education throughout North America. It will support initiatives that build awareness and encourage students to enter the field.

During an interview at IALD Enlighten Americas in Austin, Chip Israel, FIALD, FIES, LEED-AP, LC explained why he contributed more than $100,000 to the Fund.

“We have great people in lighting. We need more of them,” Chip said.

A Gateway to the Entire Profession

The opportunity extends well beyond lighting design. Chip pointed to careers in sales and manufacturing, alongside opportunities for students studying architecture, interior design, and industrial design.

However, students cannot pursue careers they have never considered. Therefore, the grant seeks to help educational institutions introduce lighting’s possibilities and turn that interest into enrollment.

For an industry built around visibility, making its own career opportunities more visible seems especially fitting.

Universities Will Help Shape the Approach

Rather than prescribe a fixed solution, Chip wants universities to help identify their needs. Their input will guide programs that address specific enrollment challenges.

A webinar on November 11 at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time will provide an opportunity to gather that feedback. Furthermore, Chip emphasized that the grant should remain flexible and evolve over time.

The goal is straightforward: Help more students discover lighting, then give them a reason to pursue it.
