We are looking for a Lighting Designer who will work alongside our senior lighting designers, assisting in the delivery of creative and technical artificial and daylighting design solutions to our challenging projects. You will work on inspiring and challenging projects in collaboration with many of the world’s leading architects, contractors and organizations.

What will I be doing?
● Provide a suitable level of technical lighting, daylighting design and creative lighting design to projects.
● Work competently on an independent and team basis.
● Prepare concept and preliminary engineering solutions for detail design.
● Directly work with clients/ and or architects.
● Assist in the production of design materials, such as concept design documents, design notes, report writing, Revit drawings + details and technical luminaire specifications.
● Provide professional lighting layouts, sections and details using Revit, Bluebeam or similar to allow a clear understanding of the concept principles.
● Ensure senior staff are kept informed of important and relevant service/design decisions and the objectives of the client are achieved.
● Continually ensuring that practices, policies, strategy and services represent the client’s best interests and that BH policy is in keeping with current legislation, US standards and Codes of Practice etc.
● Develop and enhance the Buro Happold Lighting brand offering.

What can I bring?
●Degree in Lighting, Day lighting or a related field such as architecture, design or engineering.
● 2+ years of experience
● Professional experience in the lighting design industry or equivalent is not necessary as in-house training and mentoring will be provided.
● Basic understanding and design interest in various building design sectors, including artificial lighting and daylight design and analysis.
● Must be creative and have a basic technical knowledge of lighting, daylighting and luminaires.
● Should also have excellent conceptual and communication skills, ideally being able to communicate ideas (in both hand sketch and computational form). Have general design, calculation, specification, controls, code and commissioning knowledge.
● Software skills to preferably include: 3D Studio Max, AGI, Photoshop, In-Design, Sketch-up, IES, Radiance and Revit - Familiarization with visual programming design tools (Dynamo, Grasshopper) is helpful but not essential.

Required Qualifications

Lighting/Electrical Designer

The Lighting/Electrical Designer is a hybrid position with primary responsibility for lighting design, but also electrical design. The type of work activity will depend on workload, but it is expected to be 50%-70% lighting design, and the remaining portion being electrical design. The Lighting/Electrical Designer will work directly with project owners and architects to coordinate and design interior and exterior lighting layouts and lighting control layouts starting from schematic design through project completion. This position will be responsible for selecting and organizing lighting fixtures, fixture finishes, architectural design coordination, lighting calculations, and energy code compliance. Position will stay up to date with lighting products and technology, (including current control technologies), to ensure successful project completion.

Responsibilities:
● Effectively develop lighting design for clients and owners
● Accurately complete a lighting portfolio and present proposals.
● Successfully complete lighting calculations
● Accurately calculate electrical load and size electrical equipment
● Accurately design and complete branch circuiting for receptacles, lighting fixtures, and HVAC equipment
● Accurately update and complete cut sheets, fixture schedules, and redlines.
● Effectively coordinate with clients to ensure questions are answered and expectations are met in a timely manner.
● Successfully complete projects on time and within budget.
● Efficiently conduct research and stay up to date with lighting products and technology.
● Occasional on-site visits.
● Continual education and learning to fulfill credits for lighting certification.
● Provide designer/production support on projects as lighting design workload permits
● Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field or Associate’s degree in drafting.
● Lighting Certified (LC), or the ability to become Lighting Certified (LC) within 6-12 months
● Familiarity with NEC, NFPA101, and energy codes
● Familiarity with all aspects of electrical design to assist electrical design team if/when lighting design is not required
● Working knowledge of electronic communication systems and electronic safety and security systems design
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Proven ability to build lasting relationships with clients and others.
● Proven ability to stay within budget and meet deadlines.
● Ability to work outside regular working hours as project deadlines require.
● Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit
